Hi, more problems!!! a few weeks ago my right ear felt like it had water in it, but after a while it was ok. This went on and off for a while, but now its feels blocked all the time, and feels like it needs to "pop" but it wont. Have read that quinine related meds i.e. hydroxychloroquine can do this, I also have a slight riging in that ear. Was going to make gp appt, but thought I'd ask if anyone else has had this. Its really odd, if I touch my ear at the back it feels like its waterlogged, but I know it isnt, I dont swim and wash hair in the shower, and thats about it!!Sad

Hi Barbara,

I am on hydroxychloroquine too, but have not had 'soggy ears'! My hearing has definitely deteriorated in the last few months, but that could be for lots of reasons. Your description also sounded a bit like when I had impacted wax. I hope you get it sorted soon, a quick look by the GP might give an easy answer,

good luck

Hi Barbara,

Strange you should say that, I have had exactly the same for about 10 months now!
It's my right ear and it feels waterlogged, just like you describe, especially if I press the back of it, and often feels like it needs to "pop".
I'm not on Plaquenil, just mtx and humira. I keep saying I'll mention it to my GP or rheumy nurse but I always forget. So if you see your GP about it I will be very interested in what he says.

Hi Barbara,

Not had problems with my ears but this sound exactly like the symptons my husband has, he goes to the doctors quite regularly to have his ear syringed because it gets blocked and painful, he uses drops of Olive Oil to loosen the wax before he goes otherwise they won't syringe it.

Get it checked out because if he leaves it too long before he goes he suffers quite a lot and get grumpy.

I was posting the other day about quinine, and how it make tinnitus worse. I wonder if that is what has happened to you. I have tinnitus, have had it for a few years now, and while it's not painful or life threatening, it can be quite distressing.

I try and avoid anything with quinine in it, such as tonic water, and fortunately I don't take hydroxy.

I didn't realise this could be a side effect of Plaquinel. I frequently have a build up of wax in my ears and use hopi candles to remove it. They are brilliant and not at all invasive. Also, they WORK!
